Waivers and meeting Early Childhood Teacher (ECT) requirements

15 March 2022

An early childhood teacher who is absent due to short-term illness, leave or resignation may be replaced with a person who holds an approved diploma or qualification in primary teaching for up to 60 days in a 12 month period (reg 135, National Regulations). This provision remains in place until 31 December 2023.

For absences longer than 60 days services will need to apply for a staffing waiver. A waiver application must include strategies to ensure the adequate supervision of children during the waiver period and steps that will be taken to recruit an early childhood teacher.
