Robust recruitment and screening promotes children's safety

03 September 2019

To ensure children's safety, risk management strategies focus on preventing, identifying and mitigating risks to children and young people. During recruitment and screening, the referee check is important in ensuring educators previous manager is contacted.

Questions to ask referees:

  • To your knowledge is there any aspect of the applicant’s behaviour, actions or activities that would make them unsuitable for working with children or young people?
  • Would you employ this person again?

Missing this information may mean employing someone who could negatively affect children.

Referee checks are just one part of keeping children safe. For more information see 'National principles for child safe organisations' on the Department of Human Services website.
